INGENIO WORKING PAPER SERIES What type of innovative firms acquire knowledge intensive services and from which suppliers?

چکیده
Knowledge intensive services (KIS) and, in particular, R&D services contribute significantly to innovation in firms. The objective of this paper is to find out which characteristics of firms explain the acquisition of R&D services and to analyse whether there are differences depending on the typology of the supplier (universities, technology centres and consulting firms). Three main conclusions emerge from the econometric estimations. Firstly, the results show that size and age matter in the decision INGENIO (CSIC‐UPV) Working Paper Series 2011/08 3 to buy R&D services, but these characteristics of firms do not have any particular influence in the decision to choose a specific supplier. Secondly, our results are consistent with the relevance that the literature gives to human capital in absorbing external knowledge. The variables used to control for human skills have a positive effect on the decision to buy R&D services. On the contrary, the estimates of other variables that capture internal knowledge base suggest that there is a substitution process between internal R&D activities and acquiring R&D services. Thirdly, innovation policy has a significant influence on the decision to acquire R&D services.

INGENIO WORKING PAPER SERIES Not searching, but finding: Innovation as a non-linear source of the private use of public knowledge
The use of universities and public research organisations as a source of information is increasing as firms adopt search strategies based on current models of information use. The theory of this paper is that in order to predict companies’ perceptions of the usefulness of such knowledge, their practical experience in technological innovation becomes a determinant, not directly but by enabling c...
متن کاملThe Fruit Flies of Innovation: a Taxonomy of Innovative Small Firms
Taxonomies of patterns of innovation give a dominant role to large firms, and are often based on empirical studies that exclude micro firms. This paper proposes an empirical taxonomy of the innovative firms at the bottom of the size distribution, based on a new survey of 1,234 small firms and micro firms in the Netherlands, in both manufacturing and services. These firms differ not only in thei...
متن کاملExploiting supplier innovativeness through knowledge integration
Firms are increasingly involving and relying on networks of suppliers and other external partners in their innovation processes. A successful exploitation of suppliers’ technology and competencies is however challenging, not least in situations characterised by technological uncertainty. The main purpose of this study is to analyse how supplier innovativeness may be leveraged through internal k...

Pecuniary externalities are crucial in shaping the distinctive competences and the economic success of innovative firms. The analysis of conditions for localized appropriation associated to the intensive use of idiosyncratic factors by means of the introduction of biased technological change provides a new understanding about knowledge appropriability and stresses the key role of external facto...

For companies operating under unfavourable macroeconomic conditions, such as high wage / high tax countries in central Europe, innovation has become a central theme to survive. If there is one thing that has changed in innovation management during the last decade, it is the growing reliance on external sources of technology. As a consequence, a new task for purchasing arises, as firms need an u...
